Psychological trauma is damage or hurt that occurs as a result of a severely distressing event. It manifests as the inability to cope with the fallout from the event and being overwhelmed and powerless to deal with the feelings surrounding the event.
In working with people who are experiencing trauma I do not revisit the event with them until we have looked at the emotional fallout. I work with the person in building resilience so that together we can approach the traumatising event in a gentle, compassionate controlled fashion. It is very important not to re-traumatise the person and the goal is to view the event as an experience without being overwhelmed
